Anton Corbijns Spielfilmdebüt

Control – der erste Spielfilm des niederländischen Starfotografen Anton Corbijn kommt in die Kinos. In den USA gestartet am 26. September und in Großbritannien ab 5. Oktober, gibts für Deutschland noch keine Termine. Am 28. September ist der Film in Köln zu sehen und Anfang Oktober in Hamburg.

Control – das ist ein Film über das Leben von Ian Curtis, Sänger und Texter der Band Joy Division. Curtis nahm sich 1980 im Alter von nur 23 Jahren das Leben. Daraufhin kam die Post-Punk-Band aus Manchester zu internationaler Bekanntheit. Corbijn kannte Curtis persönlich und nahm als weitere Grundlage für seinen Film die Memoiren der Witwe Deborah Curtis.

Der Film wurde im Sommer in Cannes vorgestellt und dort in der Kategorie Goldene Kamera lobend erwähnt. Am 28. September erhält er im Rahmen des Film- und TV-Festivals Cologne Conference in Köln den TV-Spielfilmpreis. Und das ist auch die Gelegenheit für die wahrscheinlich erste Aufführung in Deutschland.

Im Rahmen des Hamburger Filmfestes gibt es am 3. und 4. Oktober weitere Gelegenheiten, den Film zu sehen. Von einem Kinostart in Deutschland ist absehbar nichts bekannt.

Über Anton Corbijn muss weiter nicht viel gesagt werden: Er gilt als der einflussreichste Musikfotograf weltweit. Seine Bilder etwa von David Bowie, Miles Davis, U2 oder Depeche Mode sind legendär. Er gestaltete einen Haufen Plattencover und drehte inzwischen auch schon um die 80 Musikvideos.
Interessant ist vielleicht Anton Corbijns Statement über seine Fotografie und darüber, wie er überhaupt dazu gekommen ist:

I stumbled by accident onto photography by borrowing my father’s camera and taking it to a concert in 1972 to give myself an excuse to go closer to the stage. I then took a few photos and got them developed and printed at the local camera store and send the photos to a music magazine as I thought they looked rather good (we are talking ’good’ as seen thru the eyes of a 17 year old) and they were subsequently published.
That gave me such a boost that I went on to shoot a few more local concerts and I got addicted to the camera that way and started to love photography which really was an art form I knew nothing about whatsoever. So no-one inspired me in that sense, it just happened. After a good year of going with my father’s camera to concerts, I managed to buy my own camera and i got more interested to see what other photography was out there and I really liked the b/w photographers like Diane Arbus, Robert Frank, W. Eugene Smith etc.
I later looked at other music photographers and I liked people like Elliott Landy, Jim Marshall, David Gahr, etc. There are a lot of great technical photographers around but I tend to drift towards people who express something in their work more than those who are craftsmen. There are many people whose work I follow, like Cindy Sherman, Andreas Gursky, Thomas Ruff, Hellen Van Meene, Rineke Dijkstra and so on.
